With advice from OCA Global, Belize has adopted new sustainable projects in order to help achieve the climate goals of the Paris Agreement. The expected results are a reduction in electricity consumption and national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by implementing energy efficiency measures and renewable energy sources.
Two years ago, OCA Global helped theBanco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID)to officially launch its first pilot project on climate change mitigation, selected through an extensive process, to support the implementation of GHG emission reduction measures in Caye Caulker, Belize. One year later, the pilot project was reviewed, validated and selected by a multi-stakeholder meeting stakeholders held at the IDB offices in Belize City.
This process, led by OCA Global, resulted in the selection of a climate change mitigation measure consisting of the procurement and installation of high energy efficiency (HEE) air conditioning units for ten public building facilities, some of them powered by solar photovoltaic installations. These units are more sustainable and feature environmentally friendly alternative hydrocarbon refrigerants. In addition, they are equipped with more efficient alternatives to traditional ones that contribute to the phase-out of refrigerants, which in turn deplete the country's ozone layer, and are powered by hybrid solar energy.
