On March 12, 2018, the new ISO 45001, the standard on Occupational Health and Safety at Work that will replace the well-known OHSAS
ISO 45001 is published with the aim of enabling organizations to ensure safe and healthy working conditions, to contribute to the prevention of harm and deterioration of health by proactively improving their occupational health and safety performance. It is for this reason that the standard bases its approach not only on the management of the company, but also on the worker who must play his part in the safety equation, participating in the conditions that will make his working environment a safer place.
With the publication of ISO 45001, the OHSAS 18001:2007 standard, currently the most widely used standard for Occupational Health and Safety management, is expected to become obsolete. However, this does not mean the immediate elimination of OHSAS, but rather that organizations currently certified under that standard will have 3 years to make the transition to ISO 45001, the deadline for the validity of OHSAS 18001:2007 certificates being March 12, 2021, just 3 years after the publication date of ISO 45001:2018.
Organizations certified to OHSAS 18001 may choose to upgrade their Occupational Health and Safety Management System to ISO 45001 in the certification cycle of their choice: renewal, first follow-up or second follow-up, without any restriction. In all cases, regardless of the corresponding certification cycle, additional time must be applied to ensure that the new standard requirements are audited under optimal conditions.
OCA Global is immersed in the Transition Plan from OHSAS to ISO 45001 in accordance with the requirements of the National Accreditation Entity (ENAC), which allows us to respond to all parties involved in the certification process: information to clients, training to all company personnel, compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, adaptation/modification of procedures and formats, etc. It is expected that before the end of 2018 we will be able to offer accredited certificates for this new standard to our customers.
